This species is distributed along southern latitudes of the Pacific to Juan Fernandez and Peru, which indicate that it prefers relatively cold waters. Its occurrence in the hot waters of the Marquesas Islands (from de Man, 1890: 84, Marquesas, under L. ansoni H. Milne Edwards, 1853) is highly doubtful.
