Mayotte data
Poupin et al., 2018, ARB crabs of Mayotte - Monodaeus tuberculidens s.l. - Material examined — Mayotte KUW 2009, st. 19, Islet Handrema, north 6-10 m, 1 M 6.3 x 9.1 mm, MNHN-IU-2009-3235, det. October 2011. Not M. tuberculidens but Garthiella aff. sikatuna according to Mendoza (2023, TDSB).

Comment for 2023 - Mendoza, 2023, Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos: 149, The male specimen from Mayotte reported as “Monodaeus tuberculidens s.l.” by Poupin et al. (2018: 59, fig. 16F) probably belongs to a different genus and species based on the published photograph, and is probably a species of Garthiella Titgen, 1986, closely related to G. sikatuna Mendoza & Manuel-Santos, 2012, originally described from the Philippines (Mendoza & Manuel-Santos 2012: 40, figs. 4, 5, 6C, D, 7E-H, 8B). This specimen needs to be re-examined to ascertain its identity.

Monodaeus tuberculidens (Rathbun, 1911) s.l.
Material examined — Mayotte KUW 2009, st. 19, Islet Handrema, north 6-10 m, 1 M 6.3 x 9.1 mm, MNHN-IU-2009-3235, det. October 2011.
Remarks — Guinot & Macpherson (1998) have revised several specimens of Monodaeus tuberculidens, including the type specimen from Saya de Malha Bank (229 m) and specimens from Réunion and Madagascar. Because of morphological variations observed they have attributed the specimens from Réunion to M. aff. Tuberculidens. They also indicate that previous records from Madagascar and South Africa are in need of revision to confirm M. tuberculidens. The specimen examined herein from Mayotte present most of the characters of M. tuberculidens as indicated in Guinot & Macpherson (1998) except for the armament of upper margins of P2-P5 meri that have sharp spines instead of sharp granules for the holotype, which can be attributed to its small size (6.3 x 9.1 mm versus 12 x 18.2 mm for holotype). Due to the remarks and observations in Guinot & Macpherson (1998), however, and until more specimens are available from Mayotte to better appreciate the intraspecific morphological variations in M. tuberculidens, the present record from Mayotte is attributed to M. tuberculidens sensu lato.

Geographic and depth ranges — WIO, ?South Africa, Mayotte (this work), ?Madagascar, ?Réunion, Saya de Malha Bank; subtidal to 229 m, ?420 m.
