Anker (2001, fasc. 2, p. 219) - Pantropical, reported from Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, E and S Africa, Madagascar, Mascarenes, Seychelles, Maldives, Laccadives, Thailand, Japan, Ryukyu Islands, South China Sea, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia (new record, North West Shelf), Micronesia, Melanesia, French Polynesia, Hawaii, C Pacific, Clipperton, Clarion Island, Gulf of California, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Galapagos, Caribbean Sea, Bermuda, Brazil, Ascension Island, Cape Verde Islands, Ghana. Also ?Europa. Felder et al, 0-22 m.

Comment: According to Knowlton et al. (2016, webpage) the species is probably restricted to the Atlantic, the Indo-West Pacific records being erroneous. At least five genetically distinct cryptic species in the Atlantic Ocean, all three having similar color patterns.
