Ambiaxius alcocki (McArdle, 1900)



World Distribution
(Poore, 2020, TDSB 31) - Ambiaxius alcocki was described from northeast of Sri Lanka in 990 m depth. The species has since been reported from the eastern coast of South Africa at 805 m depth (Stebbing 1915, Barnard 1950) not far from where this new material was found (Mozambique Channel, including North of Glorieuses, 503-1248 m). Records of the species from Japan (Sakai 1995, 2011) are A. surugaensis Sakai & Ohta, 2005. Material so identified from New Caledonia (Sakai & de Saint Laurent 1989: 54) could not be found and may on biogeographical grounds belong to one of the two species described below.

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Soft bottom (mud or sand)

Vertical range : Deep (more than 100 m) - Min-Max observed: 380-1248 m

Ambiaxius alcocki - Poore, 2020 (TDSB 31), Mozambique Channel. BIOMAGLO Stn DW4805, Glorieuses Isl., 11°24’S, 47°17’E (20 km, North of Glorieuses), 775-739 m, hermaphrodite, 3.3 mm (MNHN-IU-2016-8141).
