Worldwide. Eastern and western Atlantic. Indo-west Pacific, 275-1850 m. - French Guiana, Lesser Antilles ICA (Nevis, Guadeloupe), Réunion, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Marquesas (Eiao, Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou, Fatu Hiva)
(Chan & Yang, 2023, Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos) - Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic at depths of 200-1,850 m (Holthuis 1980; Pérez Farfante & Kensley 1997; Emmerson 2016), but reported for the first time from the Glorieuses Islands.

Comment: on photos this species can be confused with Aristeus antillensis. Determinations proposed here are mostly based on the bright red color of this species while Aristeus antillensis appears paler, and distodorsal margin of 3rd abdominal tergite with a spine while it without tooth in A. antillensis (cf. Crosnier & Forest, 1973: 291, tab. 8).
