World Distribution
Worldwide: Western Atlantic from North Carolina and Bermuda, southern Florida through Gulf of Mexico, to Fernando de Noronha and Espirtio Santo, Brazil; Indo-Pacific from Durban, South Africa, and Red Sea, to Japan, Hawaii, western Australia south to 24°S and eastern Australia as far south as Shellharbour N.S.W., through New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Lord Howe Island, northern New Zealand, to Tuamotu, French Polynesia, Easter Island. No eastern Atlantic or Pacific records (Williams, 1985: 55).
Felder et al. (2009) - 1-200 m. Pantropical.
(Schnabel et al., 2021, MDPI, Diversity) - Stenopus hispidus remains the sole pantropical species in this genus, however, recent population genetic studies indicated regional genetic divergences among locations in the Indonesian Archipelago [71] and between oceans [72].
