World Distribution
Ng (1999 : 114) - Indo-Pacifique. Afrique orientale, Réunion, Maurice, Inde, Sri Lanka, Asie méridionale, Japon, Chine, Nouvelle-Calédonie, Fidji, Guam, Cook. Comprend Mayotte, premier signalement. 1.5 m (in Ng, 1999) to 200 m (in Sakai, 1976).

Material examined — Mayotte KUW 2009, st. 17, northern reef, 22 m, 1 M 55.5 x 79.8 mm, MNHN B32401, MNHN-IU-2009-1163.
REMARKS — Aethra seychellensis Takeda, 1975 from nearby Seychelles is affiliated to A. scruposa. However, it cannot be confused with A. scruposa because of its high, sublamelliform, posteriorly directed gastric projection and by strongly upturned posterolateral carapace margins of the carapace.
DISTRIBUTION — IWP, Mayotte (this work), Réunion, Mauritius to Japan, Cook Islands; 1-200 m. Traditionally this species is reported from Eastern Africa, probably from the list by Guinot (1967b: 299). However we failed to retrieve any formal records of this species from the African coast in any of the contributions for this species presented in Ng (1999), including previous contributions by Guinot (1966, 1967a). The report from Mayotte in present work seems therefore to be the IWP westernmost limit for this crab.
