Frevillea hirsuta (Borradaile, 1916)

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Hard bottom (rock and rubbles)

Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: ICA (?Guadeloupe). 73-476 m. WA.
Frevillea barbata - Poupin, 1994, 48, Guadeloupe [R/V Polka, 95 m, det. M. Tavares (MNHN)] - Not Frevillea barbata A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 but Frevillea hirsuta (Borradaile, 1916) fide Castro & Ng (2010: 53) but see Comment.
Frevillea hirsuta - Castro & Ng, 2010: 53, Guadeloupe [same as Poupin, 1994, 1 female 13.6 mm × 21.5 mm (MNHNB30600) and off Basse Terre, trap and net, 200–300 m, D. Lamy coll.: 2 males 16.6 mm × 24.9 mm, 15.5 mm × 23.3 mm, 1 female 13.3 mm × 19.9 mm (MNHN-B30601)].
Comment: In Castro & Ng (2010), it is not clear why the record of F. barbata from Guadeloupe in Poupin (1994) is corrected into F. hirsuta as these authors indicate that no confident diagnostic characters are available to separate these species (see also under F. barbata).

Comment(s) on data
Frevillea babarta and F. hirsuta are 2 species that cannot be confidently separated by using the key given by Rathbun (1918: 25), according to Castro & Ng (2010: 53, Zootaxa). These authors do not indicate additional characters that can be used to separate these 2 species with similar morphology (especially setation on carpus of cheliped and proximal part of outer face of palm). Until more specimens are examined, present records from Guadeloupe Island cannot attributed with confidence to one or the other species.
