World Distribution
Western Atlantic, probably often under Mithrax hispidus sometimes considered as a synonym. - Rathbun (1925: 411) - From North Carolina, and the Bahamas to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Shallow water to 28 fathoms.

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Hard bottom (rock and rubbles)

Vertical range : Shallow to deep-waters (e.g. 10-190 m) - Min-Max observed: 1-51 m

Comment: A species of the M. hispidus complex (see under that species). Wagner (1990) considers Mithrax pleuracanthus as a ‘smooth’ form of M. hispidus but the two species are separated by Windsor & Felder (2009). Generic rank of this species follows the ‘Corrigendum’ by Windsor & Felder (2017).

This species listed under Mithrax hispidus by Felder et al. (2009) with this remark (n°304: Records include those previously reported for Mithrax caribbaeus, M. pleuracanthus, and M. tortugae, all of which were designated junior synonyms of M. hispidus by Wagner (1990); we adopt these revisions provisionally, pending their confirmation by ongoing molecular plylogenetic analyses)
