Comment: This species is closely related to Calappa gallus (Herbst, 1803) from the Indo-West Pacific. Rathbun (1937: 214) has considered that the two species were synonyms but Manning & Chace (1990: 45) have re-established the distinction between the two and attributed all records from the Atlantic to C. galloides.
