Decapoda - Brachyura - Carcinidae - Macropipus
Türkay (1971: 118) - Type locality of this species is unclear. There is a possible confusion with 'Guadalupe' Azores as the genus Macropipus is not in America.
Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Soft bottom (mud or sand)
Vertical range : Shallow-waters (0-100 m) - Min-Max observed: 1-10 m
Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: Probably not WA but Azores (see comment).
Portunus guadalpensis (sic) Saussure, 1857: 502, Guadeloupe.
Portunus guadulpensis Saussure, 1858: 433, Guadeloupe [pl. 2, fig. 10]. - Desbonne, in Desbonne & Schramm, 1867: 36, Guadeloupe. - A. Milne-Edwards, 1873-1880: 236, Guadeloupe.
Macropipus guadulpensis - Türkay, 1971: 118, not Guadeloupe but probably Guadalupe in Azores, see comment.
Comment: After examination of the male type specimen in Genève Türkay (1971) indicate that as the genus Macropipus is not in America and as there is a place in the Azore named 'Guadalupe' there is a possible confusion for type locality, Guadeloupe being reported by error.
Comment(s) on data
Comment in Ng et al. (2008) - p. 156 - The identities of Portunus guadulpensis Saussure, 1858, and Ovalipes ocellatus floridanus Hay & Shore, 1918, were substantially clarified by Türkay (1971) when he redescribed and figured their types. It leaves no doubt that Saussure’s species is not a species of Ovalipes as had been presumed by some authors but belonging to Macropipus instead. Williams (1976) agreed, and elaborated on the taxonomy of the American species of Ovalipes.
See Evans (2018, PeerJ) for classification of this genus in Carcinidae.
