Decapoda - Brachyura - Grapsidae - Planes

Planes marinus Rathbun, 1914

World Distribution
See Chace (1951) for morphology, distribution. P. marinus is a Pacific species in this work. Also Atlantic from this base and probably worldwide.
In Prado & Melo (2002) the species is in WA, Brazil, cental Atlantic, IWP and EP.
In Pfaller et al. (2019, Ecology and Evolution, vol. 9, 957-974), P. marinus is distributed in ATL and IWP

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Pelagic or bathypelagic

Vertical range : Pelagic or bathypelagic - Min-Max observed: 0-10 m

Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: ICA (St Martin, St Barthélemy). Pelagic (floating objects). Pantropical.
Planes marinus - Saint Martin, RNN Inventory 20/04/2012, UF32333, photo dSTM_6423. - Questel, 2019: 26, St Barthélemy.
Comment: Based on photo and comparison with figure in Chace (1951: 69, fig. 1c), St Martin specimen is obviously P. marinus with carapace subquadratic and branchial areas striated (see tab. 2 in Prado & Melo, 2002). This species already reported from WA (Brazil) in Prado & Melo (2002).

Comment(s) on data
Genomic results presented in Pfaller et al. (2019, Ecology and Evolution, vol. 9, 957-974) indicate that P. minutus (ATL) and P. major (IWP) are probably conspecific and that this 'P. minutus/major species' can hybridizes with P. marinus in the North Atlantic. 'However, whether or not the carapace was striated remained distinctive between Pl. marinus and Pl. minutus/Pl. major'
