Bathynectes longispina Stimpson, 1871

World Distribution
Felder et al. (2009) - 100-1455 m. Ber, Mass–GMx, Carib–Col. Also Brazil (cf. Tavares, 2003; Revizee Program. 20°40'3S – 39°54'8W, 264-407m)

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Soft bottom (mud or sand)

Vertical range : Deep (more than 100 m) - Min-Max observed: 100-1455 m

Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: ICA (Martinique). 100-1455 m. WA.
Bathynectes superba - Paulmier, 1993: 27, Martinique [R/V Polka, trap, 200-250 m] - Probably not B. superba (Costa, 1853), see comment.
Comment: Paulmier's record is attributed herein to the single Bathynectes species occuring in the Western Atlantic, B. longispina (cf. Tavares, 2003). In WoRMS (2016) Bathynectes superba (Costa, 1853) is currently accepted as Bathynectes maravigna (Prestandrea, 1839), distributed in the eastern Atlantic only.

Comment(s) on data
Tavares (2003: 1) - The genus Bathynectes Stimpson, 1871, is recorded only from the Atlantic Ocean and contains four species: B. longipes (Risso, 1816), B. longispina Stimpson, 1871, B. maravigna (Prestandrea, 1839) and B. piperitus Manning & Holthuis, 1981. B. longipes, B. maravigna and B. piperitus occur along the eastern Atlantic coast. B. longispina was recorded only from the North American Atlantic coast (MANNING & HOLTHUIS, 1981; INGLE, 1985). This study describes B. longispina based for the first time on a sample from off Brazilian coast.
See Evans (2018, PeerJ) for classification of this genus in the Carcinidae
