Comment: In Pérez Farfante (1969, fig. 49), Penaeus aztecus aztecus Ives is replaced in the Lesser Antilles by P. aztecus subtilis Pérez Farfante, 1967, an affiliated species. Present records of P. aztecus from Lesser Antilles must therefore be confirmed with comparison specimens. The specimen examined from Martinique (Nov. 2015) is attributed to P. aztecus based on aspect of its adrostral sulcus, as illustrated in Pérez Farfante (1969).

This species is classified herein under Penaeus s.l. (instead of Farfantepenaeus Burukovsky, 1997) following the morphological and the molecular data presented by Ma et al. (2011).
