MASDEA/AfReMas (Internet), Pérez Farfante & Kensley (1997) - Indo-ouest Pacifique. Mer Rouge, à Nouvelle-Calédonie et Fidji. Afrique orientale, Kenya, Somalie, Tanzanie, Madagascar. Mayotte premier signalement probable mais à confirmer avec l'examen d'un spécimen.

(Chan & Yang, 2023, Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos) - Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from the eastern coast of Africa to Japan and Australia, intertidal to about 90 m deep (Pérez Farfante & Kensley 1997; Chan 1998).

Vertical range : Shallow-waters (0-100 m) - Min-Max observed: 0-90 m

Penaeus indicus ? - Mayotte, photo transmise par J.-B. Nicet, pêche au Djarifa devant la mangrove.

Central Pacific data (Wallis & Futuna, Polynesia, Clipperton, Easter Island)
Penaeus indicus - AQUACOP & Patrois, 1990: 67 (Imported for aquaculture only; see remark). - Fenneropenaeus indicus - Pérez Farfante & Kensley, 1997: 80, fig. 41 (New combinaison).- Poupin, 1998: 4 (Checklist). - Remark: Several other penaeoid shrimps had been imported for aquaculture purposes in Tahiti: Penaeus monodon, Fenneropenaeus indicus, Litopenaeus stylirostris and L. vannamei.

This species is classified herein under Penaeus s.l. (instead of Fenneropenaeus Pérez Farfante, 1969) following the morphological and the molecular data presented by Ma et al. (2011).
