Decapoda - Axiidea - Callichiridae - Corallianassa

Corallianassa hartmeyeri (Schmitt, 1935)

World Distribution
(Santos et al. (2012, Nauplius) - Western Atlantic, West Indies (Jamaica, type locality) and Brazil (Alagoas) (Coelho, 1997; Melo, 1999). Also Ascencion Island (Manning & Chace, 1990)
Melo (1999: 364) includes Brazil.

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Soft bottom (mud or sand)

Vertical range : Shallow-waters (0-100 m) - Min-Max observed: 1-5 m

Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: ICA (?Guadeloupe, Martinique). 1-5 m. WA (also Ascencion Island, cf. Manning & Chace, 1990).
Corallianassa hartmeyeri - Martinique, photo in situ Yan Buske, May 2015, pre-det from photo Peter C. Dworschak (Feb. 2016), based on red banded A2 flagella and overall colour it is Corallianassa hartmeyeri (photo in Santos et al., Nauplius, 2012). Additionally the specimens from Martinique have the carpus of the major cheliped about half palm length (see below). Another candidate is C. longiventris, type locality Martinique. Specimens should be checked to confirm this identification from photos. According to Manning (1988: 885), C. longiventris is distinct by a) no ventrodistal spines on the carpus of the chelipeds; b) in all specimens of C. longiventris at all sizes, the carpus of the major cheliped is longer than half the dorsal length of the palm (about half palm length in C. hartmeyeri, which is the case on specimens photographed from Martinique).

Comment(s) on data
Peter C. Dworschak (Feb. 2016) - as judged from the red banded A2 flagella and overall colour it is Corallianassa hartmeyeri. Darryl Felder pointed me to this difference in A2 banding pattern. See also colour figure in Santos P.S., Soledade G.O. & Almeida A.O. 2012. Decapod crustaceans on dead coral from reef areas on the coast of Bahia, Brazil. Nauplius 20(2): 145-169.
