Decapoda - Brachyura - Calappidae - Calappa

Calappa nitida Holthuis, 1958

World Distribution
Góes & Fernandes-Góes (2007) - shallow to 1246 m. Antilles, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, Brazil (Amapá to Bahia). - Coehlo et al. (2008) - West Indies, Venezuela, Surinam, Guyanas to Brazil. No record found in lit. from Greater and Lesser Antilles. 'Antilles' is possibly for 'West Indies', including Venezuelan coast.

Environnement : Marine - Substrat/Association : Soft bottom (mud or sand)

Vertical range : Shallow to deep-waters (e.g. 10-190 m) - Min-Max observed: 1-1246 m

Lesser Antilles data
Distribution: Lesser Antilles, ICA (?Guadeloupe, off Grenada), IOV (Testigos, Margarita). 1-1246 m (Góes & Fernandes-Góes, 2007). WA (continental?).
Calappa nitida - Bullis & Thompson, 1965 : 10, between Grenada, Testigos [R/V Oregon, st. 2772]. - Vaslet et al., 2013: 245, annexe 3, Guadeloupe [from Bourgeois-Lebel 1982, not seen]. - Taissoun, 1984-1985: 145, Margarita (Los Frailes).
Comment: According to Góes & Fernandes-Góes (2007) and Coelho et al. (2008) the species is widely distributed from 'Antilles'/West Indies, Venezuela to Brazil, collected from shallow to 1246 m! The record from Guadeloupe is suspect (reference not seen and no specimen examined). It could be another species of the 'Calappa flammea group' (see Holthuis, 1958), such as Calappa ocellata Holthuis, 1958.

Addition August 2022 - Martinique
