Mayotte data
Portunus convexus De Haan, 1835
Material examined — Mayotte KUW 2009, no specimen collected, only color photograph (C. Hily) transmitted before fieldwork by P. Froui n, University Réunion, 18 April 2009, northeastern large reef, 1 sp. about 30 x 66 (with spines) mm sandy bottom near seagrass beds of Thalassodendron. Det. J. Poupin from photo.
Remarks — Portunus convexus is recognized herein from a photograph only with a few conspicuous characters: carapace pubescent; frontal teeth rounded; anterolateral margin of carapace with 9 spines, posteriormost the larger; two lateral paler patches outlined in brown on posterior carapace. Portunus pubescens (Dana, 1852) is very similar and could be also considered but Portunus convexus is choosen by using Stephenson (1972: 15) key and presence of pale patches on posterior carapace.
Geographic and depth ranges — IWP, Erithrea, Somalia, Mayotte (this work) to Guam, French Polynesia; subtidal.
